Minjie Zhu, Michael Scott, and myself have begun to implement Python programming assignments in our graduate courses. In many ways our experience has been successful, but our approach to bringing programming into the classroom is iterative, and we are still learning how to dually teach our students the fundamentals of structural engineering while giving them experience in increasingly relevant programming languages.
The growth in computational power will have a dramatic impact on our industry. How this translates to teaching the next generation of students is still an open question.
