When does FSI matter?

Lately, I have been very interested in the regime when two-way effects between fluids and structures become significant. The degree of interaction depends on the degree of motion of the structure, along with how much the fluid is then affected. There are a variety of dimensionless numbers, including the mass number of reduced velocity number, that can be used to interpret fluid-structure interaction. However, it is unclear whether these dimensionless numbers are appropriate for breaking or broken waves or for structural systems experiencing progressive damage, with failures and openings that redirect the fluid flow.

Recently, I spoke about this topic at the SimCenter Round Table on “High-Fidelity Modeling of Wave-Induced Forces and Structural Responses”.
